2017 Gro Brundtland Week to kick off in NCKU in March
The Gro Brundtland Week of Women in Sustainable Development will kick off in National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan, on March 12 with the aim of promoting public interest in the area of sustainable development and honoring female researchers from Taiwan and developing nations.
The event is a series of talks and panel discussions focusing on sustainable development including women and child health, infectious diseases, environmental sustainability.
The Gro Brundtland Week will take place at NCKU on March 12 and is scheduled for Tunghai University on March 13, Tzu Chi University on March 15, National Taiwan Normal University on March 16, and the Tang Prize Foundation on March 17.
Five outstanding young female researchers are selected to accept the Gro Brundtland Award which offers qualified female researchers from developing countries and Taiwan an opportunity to meet and discuss with other female researchers in the same field and establish the international connection.
A grand opening will be held on the morning of March 12 at Magic School of Green Technology, Li-Hsing Campus, NCKU.
Dr. Regina Benjamin, an American surgeon who worked as the 18th U.S. surgeon general, appointed by President Barack Obama in 2009, will give an opening plenary on March 12.
After the opening plenary, a symposium and panel discussion will be held. The symposium speakers include Dr. Awor Phyllis, post doctoral fellow in Makerere University in Uganda, Dr. Li-Jung Ku, Dr. Yu-Ling Huang, and Dr. Chia-Hsin Chen from NCKU.
On March 12, Dr. Regina Benjamin will give a plenary talk titled Making a Difference. Dr. Su-May Yu from Academia Sinica, will give a plenary talk on sustainable food production on March 13 in Tunghai University, Taichung.
Dr. Kuo-Fong Ma will give a plenary talk about earthquake in Tzu Chi University, Hualien, on March 15.
Dr. Fumiko Kasuga from Future Earth Secretariat, Japan will give a talk titled Sustainable and Healthy Life in Our Future - What Can We Do for Next Generations? in National Taiwan Normal University, Taipei, on March 16.
