NCKU's New Southbound Policy (NSP) in Vietnam

Following the launch of Industrial Innovation Center in University of Malaya, Malaysia, this September, NCKU soon founded its second research center on Nov. 17 in Ho Chi Minh City Medicine and Pharmacy University, Vietnam. The technology exchange platform aims to strengthen the academic and economic links of both sides and paves the way for the cooperation network of medical device development with Southeast Asian and South Asian targeted nations.

Supported by Taiwan government's project of the Global Research and Industry Alliance (GloRIA), NCKU's Medical Device Innovation Center (MDIC) established an overseas industrial research and development center in Ho Chi Minh City Medicine and Pharmacy University, Vietnam. An exhibition center was set up to promote 14 medical device technology companies from Taiwan, including Hung Chun Bio-S Tech (鴻君科技), Codent Technical Industry Co., Ltd. (科頂科技), Huang Liang Biomedical Technology Co., Ltd. (皇亮生醫科技), MEM Dental (美萌科技), Alliance Global Technology Co., Ltd. (全球安技), BIOMATE (京達醫材), to name just a few. The alliance is targeted at developing appropriate medical devices for Vietnam, hoping to facilitate bilateral technological cooperation of medical device industries and research. There will be a contact person placed in charge of the connection work.

The opening ceremony was held in the morning on Nov. 17 in Ho Chi Minh City Medicine and Pharmacy University. The Attendees included Fong-Chin Su, Deputy Minister of Science and Technology, Huey-Jen Jenny Su, President of NCKU, Lin Wei-Cheng, Deputy Director of Southern Taiwan Science Park , Prof. Tran Diep Tuan, President of Ho Chi Minh City Medicine and Pharmacy University, Dr. Hoang Trong Hung, Dean of International Affairs of Ho Chi Minh City Medicine and Pharmacy University, Taiwan medical biotechnology industry representatives and Vietnamese alumni of NCKU. It is certainly a historic moment for both nations.

President Su indicated NCKU's effort in industrial technology foresight research especially in biomedical field. NCKU has, for a long time, served as a connection to bridge Taiwan's medical industries with top world universities in international academic and technology exchange platforms, such as in Presidents' Forum of Southeast and South Asia and Taiwan Universities (SATU). The collaborative research center of NCKU and Ho Chi Minh City Medicine and Pharmacy University has been set as an example to create bilateral business values and to advance Southeast Asia's industrial technology.

For more than a decade, NCKU has been placing emphasis on academic exchange and collaboration with Southeast Asian countries, which has built a closer link with Southeast Asian and South Asian higher educations. NCKU is now planning to make its next step into collaboration with Indonesia, expanding its further academic and economic engagement under its southbound policy that meets Taiwan government's project of NSP.
