MediaTek, NCKU Jointly Set Up First Computing Lab For Epidemic Prevention-wn

Taiwanese chipmaker MediaTek and National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) in Tainan, Taiwan, jointly set up first computing laboratory for epidemic prevention to formulate an epidemic prevention project highlighted cloud computing and innovative technology.
A press conference was held at NCKU today, December 15, to announce the joint efforts and kickoff of the project.
The project will begin with the launching of the first 'Intelligent Mosquito Lamp,' which is highlighted the Internet of Things (IoT) technology, data analysis and artificial intelligence technology, to prevent dengue fever outbreak.
The R&D result underlying the project is a cloud analytic framework for dengue fever designed by a research team from Department of Electrical and Computer Sciences in NCKU which help the Tainan City Government to control the outbreak of dengue fever effectively and raise deeper understand and awareness of dengue fever as well.
The epidemic prevention project will begin from Tainan City to further facilitate the city's existing dengue prevention system.
The first phase project will be implemented in all Tainan regions in the spring of next year and the deployment of more than 200 intelligent mosquito lamp devices will be ready to prevent dengue outbreak.
'MediaTek has a long-term interest in social issues and is committed to giving back to Taiwan through technology innovation and public welfare,' said Mr. Ching Chiang Hsieh, Vice Chairman & General Manager at MediaTek.
'MediaTek will provide R&D personnel, funding and equipment to set up a joint computing lab with NCKU in order to not only improve the accuracy of forecasting and reduce the dangers of dengue fever but also foster young talents in public health and technological epidemic prevention through practical cooperation between the university and the industry,' he added.
The research team from NCKU will include Prof. Kun-Ta Chuang from Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering and Prof. Nai-Ying Ko from Department of Nursing, NCKU School of Medicine.
The use of MediaTek LinkIt Internet development platform and chips advanced the traditional mosquito lights to a new and smart one which will do more than just catching mosquitoes but also collecting disease-causing mosquito information, according to Prof. Chuang.
NCKU President Huey-Jen Jenny Su said, 'With the dengue fever outbreak in Tainan in 2015, NCKU has invested a lot to help the Tainan City Government in its efforts to prevent dengue fever.'
Tainan City Mayor Ching-Te Lai said, 'The cooperation between NCKU and Tainan City Government in 2015 has been successful and effective. I believe the collaborative efforts between Mediatek and NCKU will help Tainan City fight against dengue fever more effective and smarter.'
This epidemic prevention project is the starting point for the joint efforts among industry, government and academia.
Tainan will be the first city to carry out the project and it is hoped that in the near future it will gradually expand to other cities and counties in Taiwan.
On the scale of disease prevention, the future expansion of epidemic disease prevention will be toward other mosquito-borne diseases like Japanese encephalitis and Zika virus.
