Coming Soon! NCKU Global Cultural Food Festival

An upcoming event, “NCKU Global Cultural Food Festival,” will take place on Nov. 1st and 2nd, 2019, at NCKU. It consists of two parts, “Culture Day” and “Food Festival,” each offering plenty of fun activities. There will be stalls set up by overseas Chinese students from countries such as Malaysia, Myanmar, Indonesia, and several others. This two-day event will offer not only exotic cuisine but also various kinds of performances that display cultural diversities from different countries. It will be a unique opportunity for people to take a glance into foreign customs and traditions without traveling abroad.

“Culture Day” will take place in the Student Activity Center located in Kuang-Fu Campus at NCKU from 17:30 p.m. to 21:00 p.m. on Nov. 1st. There will be exhibitions for people to experience cultural diversities. For example, “Blending of Cultural, Malaysia” will display traditional costumes and introduce classic games in Malaysia. “Journey to the Emerald of the Equator,” organized by Indonesian students, will offer tasty food and instructions on how to play Indonesian traditional musical instruments. On the Burmese stall, in addition to a display of traditional costumes and natural skincare products like Thanakha, there will be basic introduction to the Burmese language and tourist attractions in Myanmar. Other than that, “Learning Cantonese, Overwhelmed by Culture of Hong-Kong and Macau” will teach fundamental Cantonese speaking skills, explain humor in Cantonese movies, and provide a guide to what and how to order at a cha chaan teng (tea restaurant). Last but not least, “Travel around the World” will offer a platform for students of different ethnicities to exchange and share information, and thus broaden their horizon.

“Global Food Festival” will take place in front of Sheng-Li Old Library Hall, right across the NCKU Museum, from 9:30 a.m. to 16:30 p.m., on Nov. 2nd. In the food festival, people can savor exotic cuisine, such as “samosa” from India, “roti canai” from Malaysia, and “coconut milk jelly” from Myanmar. Besides delicacies, various kinds of cultural performances will also be available.

2019 “NCKU Global Cultural Food Festival” is distinctive because it combines cultural activities with food. This is also the first time at NCKU to incorporate the event into activities that celebrate the university’s 88th anniversary, and overseas Chinese students from other universities are also invited to perform on the same day. Furthermore, there will be henna tattoos for everyone interested to experience at the festival.

Lasting for two days, the “Global Cultural Food Festival” aims at showcasing and promoting the multicultural learning environment at NCKU through a wonderful combination of “Cultural Day” and “Global Food Festival.” With a series of events, Overseas Chinese Students Affairs Division and Overseas Chinese Students Association endeavor to show the beauty of diversified overseas Chinese cultures at NCKU. No registration is required in advance for any of these outdoor activities. Just come and have fun! (End item:Christina Wang)
